Electric standing desks have gradually appeared on the market in recent years, originating from European and American countries. They can be used as computer desks or office desks. I only learned about such cool products because my former bosses used them. To help everyone understand more, I've compiled relevant information about standing desks to give you a better understanding of their function~

Types of Standing Desks

There are many types of standing desks, and before purchasing, you need to understand which type is right for you. It turns out there are so many varieties, and different types are needed depending on the requirements. Commonly used for studying, working, and browsing the internet, they are broadly divided into the following three categories based on their lifting mechanism:

1. Automatic: Generally powered by electricity, these desks use a motor to control a mechanical device to adjust the height, or a compressor to control pneumatic or hydraulic rods to adjust the desk's height. These types of desks come in single-leg and dual-leg forms, with remote and manual control options. This concept has become popular in Western countries, and professional manufacturers now produce patented products. They consume very little electricity, are stable and aesthetically pleasing, and offer a large height adjustment range, but they are also more expensive. Their main lifting mechanism relies on an electric lifting system, and the quality of this system determines its lifespan. Since the lifting system is a mature industry, choosing a reputable manufacturer generally ensures no quality issues.

2. Non-automatic: Non-automatic standing desks are a simplified version of automatic ones, without a motor or compressor, and rely on manual effort to adjust the mechanical device. They require a bit of force to lift and lower, necessitating manual manipulation of certain buttons, and have a limited height adjustment range. However, they are cheaper and do not require electricity or oil.

3. Desktop standing desks: Desktop standing desks are units placed on an existing desk to create a workstation. They use gas spring assistance for effortless height adjustment.

In addition, there are also the following six types:
1. Pneumatic standing desk (automatic fixed height): Suitable for prolonged sitting, those with a limited budget, and those who need to frequently change desks. Typically has average weight capacity.
2. Pneumatic standing desk (knob fixed height): Suitable for occasional adjustments, inexpensive.
3. Electric standing desk: Suitable for prolonged sitting, those with a higher budget, those who need to frequently change desks, quiet, and requires a high weight capacity.
4. Crank standing desk: Suitable for occasional adjustments, takes more time, and is noisy.
5. Desktop standing desk: Suitable for prolonged sitting, those with a limited budget, typically has average weight capacity, used by placing it directly on a desk, no installation required.
6. Pin-lock standing desk: Suitable for occasional adjustments, inexpensive.

Considerations for Choosing a Standing Desk
Automatic standing desks have a wide range of uses, with more industrial applications, such as factory workbenches that can support 100 kg. Gradually, they have also expanded into office furniture. Many companies in European countries have replaced their work desks with electric standing desks, and some companies in Hong Kong are also starting to use them, as everyone has different needs and timings for adjusting their posture.

Size, weight capacity, height adjustment range, and ease of operation all affect the price. Before purchasing, consider the following:
1. How much space do you have for a standing desk?
2. What items will be placed on the desk?
3. What is the suitable height adjustment range?

Dangers of Prolonged Sitting

Prolonged sitting can indeed affect health. If you sit for eight hours every day, you might experience some physical changes. Besides easily leading to swollen lower limbs or back pain, sitting too long is a new crisis. Seeing these risks made me get up from my chair quickly out of fear!
1. Brain fog: Engaging in prolonged sitting behavior results in a thinner brain region responsible for memory. Even high-intensity physical activity cannot offset this damage.
2. Tense shoulders and neck: Causes neck and shoulder pain.
3. Loss of spinal elasticity: When we move, the intervertebral discs act like sponges soaking in blood and nutrients, expanding and contracting. But when we sit for long periods, the discs are unevenly compressed, and collagen around tendons and ligaments hardens.
4. Stiff hip joints: People who sit for long periods rarely stretch their anterior hip flexors, causing these muscles to become short and stiff, which limits range of motion and stride length.
5. Slack abdomen: A protruding belly can be caused by a lack of exercise on one hand, and poor posture on the other, leading to spinal and pelvic misalignment, which affects body shape. When you sit upright or walk, your abdominal muscles pull you up. But when you slouch, tight back muscles and a slack abdomen can cause excessive curvature of your lumbar spine, leading to back pain.
6. Leg dysfunction: Poor blood circulation in the legs; prolonged sitting slows blood circulation, causing fluid to accumulate in the legs. This can lead to problems ranging from ankle swelling and varicose veins to dangerous blood clots, known as deep vein thrombosis.
7. Dangerous diseases: Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, chronic kidney disease.

The good news is that just standing up or stretching, even for a short minute, can activate hormone-sensitive lipase. Of course, some people choose a more drastic measure – standing while working, which is becoming increasingly popular. If you've been sitting for a while, why not stand up and move around after reading this!
